Behind The Seams

Fashion designer and owner of Seams Sew Jazzy, Jasmine Chestnut and I linked up this weekend to discuss her fashion line and being a business owner. I even got a chance to rock a unique piece from her upcoming mens line!

There is a huge difference in doing what you love and being exceptional at what you do. A lot of the time people see the finished product and don't realize what kind of time and effort

was put into it. No matter what God given talent you have been blessed with, if you don't work hard at honing it it won't make much of a difference, and neither will you.

With that being said, Jasmine is no stranger to hard work. A self-taught seamstress, Jasmine has grown accustomed to working a nine to five full-time job, while simultaneously running a clothing business and also doing some styling of her own.

So tell me a little bit about yourself and your brand.

"I began sewing and crocheting around the age of eight or nine and, in 1999, placed 3rd in the Betty Spaghetti Dolls contest. Business began late November, 2012, while crocheting at work to pass time. People would continuously request custom garments prompting my official launch of Royalty Crochet online and via social media. The following year, the name was changed to She Sew Jazzy, and tutus, knitting were added to the custom garments in the collection. In the spring of 2014, I finally came up with Seams Sew Jazzy, in order to appeal to more than just women.

Today, I make either one of one or small batches to keep the exclusivity and be unique. Here, at Seams Sew Jazzy, I believe you're more than a customer, you're custom. I also cater to birthdays, proms, weddings, baby showers, and graduations."

First, congratulations on all the work you've put in thus far and I wish you many years of success. Secondly, thanks for the fly top I'm in today. Tell me a little more about your mens segment.

"Throughout the year, expect to see exclusive releases, such as the one you are wearing, and I do custom menswear as well. There will also be a few unisex pieces."

As far as the future goes, what does Seams Sew Jazzy have in store for us?

"I plan to get into the entertainment industry in terms of styling and creating pieces for wardrobes. In addition to that, continue to be a shining example to the youth, and particularly the african american youth, that you can be whatever you dream to be if you put the work in."
